How much expressed breastmilk should I give my infant?
I get asked this question frequently.
How much expressed breastmilk do I give my breastfed infant if I need to provide them with my milk?
To work out a volume to give your infant you can calculate an approximate amount.
Research shows that breastfed babies from 1-6 months drink an average of 800mls per day though some will take less and some more
To work out the volume of a single feed divide 800mls by the number of feeds your infant usually takes in 24 hours then multiply this amount by the number of breastfeeds you will be missing.
For example:
Your infant takes 10 feeds in 24 hours, 800ml = 10 = 80ml per feed, if 3 breastfeeds will be missed then the total amount of milk your infant would need would be 3 × 80ml = 240ml
